Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Technology-based interventions (TBIs) such as those using phone call, text messages, and smartphone apps are widely used for improving routine vaccination coverage and timeliness worldwide. However, little is known if these technologies demonstrate value for money to justify investment in public health systems, particularly in resource constrained settings. The key scientific questions of this project are evaluating the impact of TBIs in increasing childhood immunization coverage and timeliness and their cost-effectiveness. In order to answer this question, a systematic review and network meta-analysis will be conducted to synthesize information and create an evidence base on effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of TBIs in improving immunization coverage in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs).
In the first phase of the first year, a comprehensive electronic database (PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost) search has been performed to identify the relevant articles. A total of 11,962 relevant articles have been identified. After discarding the duplicate 8,290 articles were identified for title and abstract screening. Two independent reviewers were hired to screen the review based on the PICOS framework and inclusion criteria. In addition, we have registered our protocol in the PROSPARRO.

My project is going as planned as all scheduled comprehensive searches have been completed and are ready for data extraction in 2023.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the first phase of second year, using a customized data extraction form, two reviewers will independently extract the data on study characteristics, including sample, location, design, intervention, effect size, vaccination coverage rate, cost, and effectiveness of intervention. Two independent reviewers will perform the risk of bias assessment for each included study using Cochrane Collaboration’s Tools. Then, Bayesian fixed- or random-effects meta-analysis will be used to summarize the effect size of individual interventions for each outcome separately.
Bayesian network meta-analysis will be performed to identify the best effective intervention for vaccination coverage. Finally, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of interventions will be calculated to assess economic efficiency of each intervention in increasing coverage.
The last phase of second year, we will prepare the final report, conference presentation, and manuscript for publication.

Causes of Carryover |
Research Assistants hired in Bangladesh for screening were very efficient and were able to complete tasks in a shorter time frame than was expected. The funds from FY2022 will be utilized for data extraction tasks in FY2023.
