Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In fiscal year 2022, we deployed a series of biochar-based nanocatalysts towards a model reaction of steam reforming of methanol (SRM). As a proof of concept, we set out to explore, for the first time, a simple yet effective bifunctional system for SRM under harsh conditions. The combinations to achieve best SRM performance were successfully screened. Last year, we successfully used surface science experiments and first-principles calculations (e.g., HAADF-STEM, XAFS, TPSR, DFT) to reveal the catalyst structure and potential reaction mechanism for the enhanced catalysis. The paper is now under preparation. Besides, we have prepared a review about the engineering of biochar-supported metal catalysts for biomass tar elimination that is inseparably associated with the original research proposal.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Dr. Gai continued the research smoothly. The catalyst developed in fiscal year 2022 was characterized in this year, with various characterization methods in our lab and SPring-8 (he obtained his machine time by himself). The results will be published in a scientific journal soon.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will firstly submit the two papers after revision in the near future, and then focused on the experimental study of long-term stabilities of the established hydrochar-based bifunctional system for SRM under harsh conditions in this fiscal year.
