Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the first year, the JSPS Fellow achieved the following:
- Systematic literature review of participation and motivation in disaster preparedness (DP), and model to engage in DP with a focus on disaster narrative, disaster responsibility, community integration and trust.
- Identification of DP initiatives and communities in Italy. Contacted relevant institutions: Protezione Civile (Civil Protection), Messina University, Municipal Office of Messina, Fire Fighters of Messina.
- Data collection in Messina: 67 surveys, 12 interviews with receivers and providers of disaster preparedness initiatives, 1 workshop, 10 participant observation, data analysis of around 50 documents.
- Preliminary results were shared as a poster presentation at the GADRI Conference in Kyoto University in March 2023.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

In the first year, the Fellow comprehensively analysed the social and historical factors of disaster preparedness in Messina. Preliminary results suggest that gender, age, and strength of religious belief do have an impact on the individual risk perception of the respondents and the belief in one’s own abilities to save oneself. It was also found that the population is aware of disaster risk but does not believe in the efficacy of disaster preparedness measures and of the authorities to successfully mitigate risk. On the other hand, the Fellow found the authorities (Fire Fighters and Municipal Offices) greatly interested in the topic and in the idea of an exchange with the Japanese counterparts. The Fellow plans to establish two-way exchanges in the second year of the Fellowship.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the second year, the JSPS Fellow will achieve the following:
- Identify disaster prevention initiatives and communities in Japan. She will contact relevant institutions and contacts in Japan (e.g. Fire and Emergency Department and the Municipal Office of Fukuoka City, Tohoku University)
- Distribute surveys and conduct interviews and observations of disaster initiatives in Japan through established contacts at International Houses Associations, language and training schools, and with students at Tohoku and Kyoto University.
- Distribute results of Italian case-study in Messina through a symposium.
- Publish an academic article on the Italian case study and one on the Japanese case-study.
