Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Progress has been made in developing a framework for considering risks to achieving national energy system decarbonisation based on a literature review. Efforts are being made to apply this framework to the case of Japan, Germany, and Korea. Work will be presented at an international conference (ECPR 2023) in September, with a planned submission to Energy Research and Social Science in late 2023. Progress on paper 2 will follow this.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is progressing according to plan as explained below: Dr. Gregory Trencher (JSPS host researcher) is co-author for all planned outputs. 1. Development proceeds on framework for considering risks to achieving national energy system decarbonisation based on literature. 2. Application of framework (#1) to case of Japan, Germany, and Korea. 3. Book chapter on the risks of emphasising new technologies over known solutions in pursuing energy transitions in Japan. 4. Paper planned with Dr. Andrew Chapman (Kyushu University). Develop a national energy system model to consider social, economic, and environmental viability of an energy system drawing on only Japan’s domestic renewable resources, compared to continued import of overseas fuels, under a net zero 2050 scenario.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Apr-Aug: Review literature & develop decarbonisation risk framework. Sept: Present decarbonisation risk framework at ECPR 2023. Sept-Dec: Improve framework before submission to journal. Apr-Nov: Write chapter drawing on decarbonisation risk framework, & expand to consider broader energy planning risks outside hydrogen & ammonia contexts. Apr-Mar 2024: Data acquisition, model design, & tests complete by September 2023, paper complete fall & winter.
