Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Due to changing visa regulations for Bangladesh, fieldwork in Bangladesh had been
delayed and shortened. However, we have successfully completed all fieldwork
activities and we are back on schedule. First research findings have been presented in small seminar and lecture settings and at the Association for Asian Studies conference in March 2024. Miriam also participated in a workshop held along the Thai-Myanmar border in December 2023 under my guidance and in the JSPS Science Dialog Program in March 2024.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Miriam has written a 2,000-word essay on her findings on the Bangladesh-Myanmar
and Thai-Myanmar border. The essay is being copy-edited and will be published in the next issue of Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia. She is further designing a concept paper for a workshop we plan to hold on refugees, families, and borders and a first draft for a paper to present at this workshop.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Miriam is scheduled to finish the concept paper for the planned workshop at the end of May, after which we will discuss and edit it and send invitation emails to prospective participants. The workshop is to be held in autumn (approx. October 2024) before Miriam finishes her fellowship. We hope to subsequently publish an edited volume or a special issue with the participants. Miriam will further hold a presentation at a border studies conference organised by Chulalongkorn University and the Inya Institute on Myanmar’s Borderlands in June and another paper presentation for the annual EuroSEAS conference in Europe in July.
