Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Animal experiments were performed to investigate the feasibility of the nerve trunk stimulation. The animal experiments focused on fine motor control using super-selective nerve trunk stimulation. Feasibility of the nerve truck stimulation was evaluated. A bench test model of the implantable FES device was developed to evaluate the feasibility of implantable FES. A cuff-type electrode sheet and a helical-type electrode sheet were developed to stimulate on the nerve trunks of the upper and lower limbs. Bench tests of the test model of the implantable FES device demonstrated that the model works well as specified. Animal experiments using macaque monkeys were performed regarding the upper limb and successfully demonstrated that both of the electrode sheets were able to stimulate selective contraction of the innervated muscles. Further investigation will be required to successfully evoke super-selective contraction of the single muscle of each finger The budget related to this research project over 2022-2024 is larger than the budget of this grant, therefore, for additional assistance, a KAKENHI KIBAN A was used to cover the total budget. The budget of this grant in 2023 was used for a part of this study: expendables required for experiments.
