Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Al-carbon nanotube(CNT) composites with high mechanical and electrical properties were fabricated by solving (1) Exquisite interfacial control and (2) uniform dispersion of CNTs in Al matrix using low oxygen powder metallurgy process. By using bare Al nanopowder, first, the agglomeration of CNTs was improved and the dispersibility of CNTs was enhanced within the Al matrix. Second, oxide-less Al/Al and Al/CNT interfaces were prepared. oxide-less Al/Al interfaces contributed to preserving the electrical conductivity of Al. On the other hand, very fine Al4C3 were formed at Al/CNT interfaces with oxide-less layer by heat-treatment at much lower temperature. The uniformly dispersed fine Al4C3 particles enhanced the strength of the Al-CNTs composites without degrade of electrical conductivity of Al.
