2023 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Exploring natural analogues of future oceans to determine the adaptive potential of marine fishes to climate change

Research Project

Project/Area Number 22KJ3084
Allocation TypeMulti-year Fund
Research InstitutionOkinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University

Principal Investigator

Izumiyama Michael  沖縄科学技術大学院大学, 科学技術研究科, 特別研究員(DC1)

Project Period (FY) 2023-03-08 – 2025-03-31
KeywordsPublication / Presentation / Collaboration / Travel Grant
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

For this fiscal year, I collected samples for my project by visiting a unique CO2 seep site with collaborators, presented my research at two conferences, and co-authored four papers. I visited Vulcano Island, Italy, to collect samples from a CO2 seep in collaboration with The University of Palermo and Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn.I presented oral presentations of my research at two conferences, the 5th Asia-Pacific Coral Reef Symposium (APCRS), Singapore, and the 11th Indo-Pacific Fish Conference, Auckland, New Zealand. I was also awarded the APCRS travel support grant from the Japanese Coral Reef Society to attend and present my research at the conference. I also co-authored four papers with collaborators for the work at CO2 seeps.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

My current progress is going well. There have been some changes from the initial project plan due to the pandemic, but all sampling for my research has been concluded. I was able to work with collaborators from the University of Tsukuba, Palermo University, the Research Institute for Development (IRD), and Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn. I have presented oral presentations at three international conferences and have received a travel award from the Japanese Coral Reef Society. I have recently submitted a first-author manuscript, which is under review, and I am currently preparing my PhD thesis as well as another manuscript for submission this year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

My research plan for this year is to publish the findings from my research and present my work at conferences. I have recently submitted a manuscript that is under review, and I am working on an additional paper and my PhD thesis, which I plan to submit soon. I have been invited to present my work at the University of Tsukuba Marine Biotech symposium, and my talk was accepted at the European Coral Reef Symposium.
