Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project aims to elucidate the genetic diversity of the main populations of the most important commercial species of the mahogany family in the Peruvian Amazon, the big-leafed mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) and cedro (Cedrela odorata L.), and to consider practical ex situ conservation techniques for resources necessary to develop effective management programs, and develop guidelines for genetic conservation of mahogany species. Research achievements in the first year are as follows. (1) In order to carry out this research project, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on scientific and technological cooperation was signed with the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP-Peru) and with the National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios (UNAMAD-Peru). (2) Field surveys and research meetings with overseas joint researchers were conducted to explore evaluation sites and target individuals and populations of mahogany species.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the fact that the first year of the project started in October and that there were problems with access to some research sites, a part of the originally planned activities were postponed until the following year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the next year, the following studies will be carried out. (1) Select study sites and target individuals/populations and start collecting samples for genetic analysis and experimental materials for ex situ conservation. (2) Start preliminary experiments on genetic analysis and ex situ conservation.
|
Causes of Carryover |
(理由)Since the plan for the first year of the project could not proceed as planned, and because is expect that the amount for collecting research materials would be more than planned, a portion of the amount was carried over to the next year. (使用計画)For the promotion of the research, the purchase of consumables and other items required for field research and the personnel costs of field research assistants are planned. In addition, the necessary travel expenses for presenting the obtained results at research meetings have been included.
