Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The results of this year's research are as follows. ① For the tree species targeted by the research, Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) and Cedar (Cedrela odorata L.), we collected the leaves and inner bark tissue for genetic analysis. Specifically, we collected experimental materials from individuals and target populations at the selected test sites. As a result, we collected research samples of each of the two species in the departments of San Martin, Loreto, Ucayali and Madre de Dios in the Amazon region, and measured their individual locations using GPS. In addition, samples were collected from trees planted in parks and roadside trees in Lima. The collected materials were quickly dried and preserved using silica gel. To bring the collected samples to Japan, we requested a sample export permit from SERFOR (National Forestry and Wildlife Service), with which we imported the scientific material to Japan. ② To begin preliminary experiments on ex situ conservation, we designed a mini vinyl house for cuttings at the National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The experiments necessary for genetic analysis were delayed because the export permit procedure for the collected experimental materials took longer than expected.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Next year, we will conduct the following research. ① Perform genetic analysis of the collected samples. ② Collect experimental materials for ex situ conservation and begin preliminary experiments on cuttings and grafting of target tree species.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Because the project could not proceed as planned, and because it is expected that the amount to be used for genetic analysis and propagation experiments for ex-situ conservation will be higher than planned, a portion of the amount was carried over to the next year. In order to advance the research, we plan to cover the purchase of consumables necessary for genetic analysis and propagation experiments for ex situ conservation, as well as the labor costs of local assistants. It also includes the travel expenses necessary to present the research results at a research meeting.
