| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The main objective of the study was (i) to determine the patterns and prevalence of hepatitis B, C and D genotypes and circulating RAVs in Nigeria, and to predict the optimal VH therapeutic options for Nigeria. Upto now we have successfully processed and transported the DNA/RNA samples of hepatitis B, C and D samples for further testing to Nagasaki, Japan. We completed the HBV genotyping, drug resistant associated mutation analysis, and vaccine escape mutant analysis, and hepatitis D screening of the HBV positive samples. The study results has been published as Nigeria CDC PhD student's research paper (ref: Adewuyi O', et al. Molecular Epidemiology, Drug-Resistant Variants, and Therapeutic Implications of Hepatitis B Virus and Hepatitis D Virus Prevalence in Nigeria: A National Study. Pathogens. 2025 Jan 20;14(1):101). The Nigeria CDC PhD student graduated his PhD in 2025 March.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The study has been going on well but there was a delay is sample shipment from Nigeria to Nagasaki due to the COVID19 situation in Nigeria. Therefore, we have extended the study period to complete the genotyping and data analysis of HDV and HCV of the study. We aim to complete this in 2025 study period.
|
| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will conduct the whole genome sequencing experiment to determine the genotype, drug resistant variance of the HDV and HCV positive samples. The study results will be summarized (i) to presented at international meeting, and publication at peered reviewed journal.
|
| Causes of Carryover |
We could not complete the genotype sample testing for HDV and HCV last year due to the delay in sample shipment from Nigeria to Nagasaki. Therefore we need to carry over the last year's remaining budget of 2,215,733yen to be used for reagents and consumables purchase for the sample testing, travel fee for presentation at international conference and publication fee of the study findings.
