Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、申請者らが開発したレーザー誘起結晶化法をガラス表面での平面状二次元エピタキシャル結晶パターニング、ガラス内部への単結晶ラインパターニングへと新たに展開して本手法の基盤技術を創出すると共に、レーザー照射領域での結晶成長機構を解明して、従来の結晶成長概念にブレイクスルーをもたらす新たな結晶成長工学を構築することを目的とする。
(1)レーザーによる結晶化では、レーザー走査方向を変化させても、結晶は方位を変えながら配向した結晶が成長する。結晶異方性が大きく異なる(複屈折率が大きく異なる)2種類の結晶について、角度45度を持つ屈曲状の結晶ラインをパターニングし、配向がどの段階で変化するかを調べた。結晶異方性の大きいBaB2O4結晶では、レーザー走査方向を変えると、ただちに、しかも徐々に、優先結晶方位であるc-軸に向きを変える。一方、結晶異方性の小さいBaAlBO3F2結晶では、レーザー走査方向を変えても、優先結晶方位であるc-軸にはすぐに方位を変えず、しばらく、非優先結晶方位のまま成長し、やがて優先結晶方位であるc-軸に向きを変える。これは、非優先結晶方位で成長しても、ガラスの結晶化によって十分エネルギーの利得が得られているためと解釈される。このような結晶成長は、通常の結晶成長では出現しない、極めて特異な結晶成長であり、新たな結晶成長工学と呼べる分野と見なすことができる。
(2)上に述べた結晶成長の柔軟性に着目し、クロスする結晶ラインを作製して、二つの結晶ライン(同じ結晶相)での結晶成長方位の相関を調べた。その結果、後から書き込まれた結晶の成長方位は、最初に書かれた結晶相が核として働き、優先結晶方位とは無関係に、自己組織的なホモエピタキシャル結晶成長が起きていることを発見した。通常のガラスの結晶化では、ヘテロエピタキシャル結晶成長は確認されているが、ホモエピタキシャル結晶成長は本研究が初めてある。
