Research Abstract

１．現生海生軟体動物の生活史と生息環境の関係に関する研究
日本列島周辺に生息する浅海生二枚貝類について、貝殻の微視的成長と海水温との関連性を貝殻成長縞編年学と安定酸素同位体比分析により調べた。その結果、北海道北東部の貝類では、殻の成長期間は5月から10月に限られ、水温8℃以下の期間（11月から4月）は殻成長を停止して成長障害輪を形成するのに対し、年水温変動が23℃(1月)から29℃(7月)と小さい沖縄県西表島の貝類では、年輪を形成せずに年間を通じて成長することがわかった。このことから、貝類の年間を通じての殻成長は海水温に規制されることが判明した。
２．白亜紀軟体動物二枚貝類の生活史と生息環境の関係に関する研究
温室地球期での二枚貝類の生活史形質と生息環境との関連性を明らかにする目的で、米国サウスカロライナ州のPee Dee層(前期マーストリヒチアン期)、テネシー州のCoon Creek層、カナダ、アルバータ州のBearpaw層（ともに後期カンパニアン期）から産する二枚貝類を対象に、成長縞の解析と安定酸素同位体比の分析を行った。その結果、どの種についても顕著な成長障害輪を形成せず、潮汐周期を反映した微細成長縞を連続的に形成することがわかった。初生的な貝殻構造と鉱物組成を保存した浮遊性有孔虫、底生有孔虫、二枚貝類化石の酸素同位体比分析の結果によれば、白亜紀後期の北米内陸海の表層水温は約28℃、低層水温は17℃であった。北西大西洋の陸棚下部に生息したカキ類の貝殻酸素同位体比から求められた古水温は、15℃から20℃の範囲で変動し、おそらく年スケールの温度変化を反映していることが示唆された。貝殻成長縞の成長様式の特徴や古水温記録からみて、白亜紀後期の北米内陸海や北西大西洋陸棚に生息した貝類は温室地球期に適応した生活史形質を持っていたことが示唆される。
