Outline of Final Research Achievements

Highly diastereoselective photochromic diarylethene derivative was achieved based on the intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Its cyclization quantum yield was as high as 0.85 and the diasteremer ratio was >99.5:<0.5, namely nearly perfect stereocontrol was achieved. In this system intramolecular hydrogen bonds worked co-operatively so that both cyclization quantum yield and the cyclization diastereoselectivity became high.
In addition, we carried out photocyclization of a diarylethene possessing hydroxymethyl groups trapped in human serum albumin in phosphate buffer media. When the incubation temperature was kept as -4 degrees centigrade, the enantioselectivity was as high as 71% ee.
