Research Abstract |
Strigolactone production is increased under phosphate-deficient conditions. Under such nutrient conditions, leaf senescence was shown to be delayed in rosette leaves of strigolactone-deficient Arabidopsis mutants. This phenotype was complemented by application of strigolactone. In contrast, in young rosette leaves, strigolactone induced greening (an increase in chlorophyll levels). These results indicate that strigolactones promote senescence in old leaves, while they induce greening in young leaves.
