Research Abstract |
Nitrergic nerves dilating smooth muscles of blood vessels and corpus cavernosum penis play an important role in the physiological regulation of cerebral circulation and erection, respectively. In the present study, change in nitrergic nerve function was examined in the corpus cavernosum isolated from experimental model rats of life style-related diseases such as SHR for hypertension and ZDF rats for diabetes with obese. In the experimental model rats, neurogenic dilating activity of smooth muscles was decreased due to hyperfunction of constricting nerves, hypofunction of dilating nerves, or both. Decreased expression of nNOS in the corpus cavernosum is suggested to cause erectile dysfunction in ZDF rats.
