Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed to describe complex livelihood of the Nikkei farms in Maues, well-known Japanese transmigration site in the Brazilian Amazon, by examining “ Low Input Sustainable Agriculture(LISA)” which makes use of spatial differences in natural environment such as varzea (floodplain) and terra firme (plateau) effectively. The example farm family owns lands in varzea and terra firme and conduct transhumance between them by using ship. Cattle are grazing in varzea during dry season, and in terra firme during rainy season. In the terra firme forest without having inundation throughout a year, swidden farming and hunting-gathering are conducted. In addition, peddling by ship is important non-agricultural management to gain cash income. Such complex management which makes use of river environment is the base of sustainability and safety for the livelihood in the Amazon.
