Outline of Final Research Achievements

We aimed to develop a handy technique for calculating individual energy requirements in children with motor disabilities. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) was measured by the ventilated-hood indirect calorimetry system using the dilution method, in which subjects only experience a minor sense of incompatibility or unpleasantness. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was measured by the double-labeled water method, which is regarded as the most accurate measurement procedure at present. Total energy intake (TEI) was calculated using dietary records. The RMR, TEE, and TEI values were then compared. The study showed it was possible to determine an individual’s energy requirement with a reasonable degree of accuracy using the indirect calorimetry system.
