Research Abstract |
People in the ancient days were not interested in remains at all, and neglected them without reflecting. People in the middle ages carefully carried cremated bones to a sacred place. People after the modern days made families' graves to place bones and repeated visits to graves periodically. The attitude of the people who lived on the Japanese Islands has changed dramatically. It is expected to be extremely difficult to find a common concept in regards to dead people or souls among these three parties. This is the very reason that indicates the necessity to fundamentally review the common opinions in the past summarized in the form of "view of life and death by Japanese people". We need to carefully reexamine the changes of view and concept to dead people developed on the Japanese Islands based on historical materials, without the premise of view of life and death peculiar to the race penetrating through times.
