Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Objectives: 1)Document the linguistic and sociocultural development of the participants on an ongoing basis ;2)Examine the affordances for language learning available in the social learning space;3)Explore the effects that changes in the learning space might have on potential affordances.
Action:1)Interviewed participants and research assistants at the end of each semester.2)Carried out participant observation through weekly observation reports.3)Interviewed the manager and two teachers 4)Had participants take the TOEIC.
Findings:1)Theoretical: The findings of the study have broadened the understanding of out-of-class language learning by providing insights into how the social construction of places can enhance and at time imped learning.2)Research: To document constant change in social learning spaces over time, this study suggests that future studies should adopt an ecological perspective and explore these phenomenon as complex dynamic systems.3)Practice: The current study has yielded insights to guide educators and administrators charged with the tasks of developing and maintaining social learning spaces for language learning. For example, the current study suggests that rigid administrative control of the learning space and activities can be detrimental to the emergence of affordances for learning. On the other hand, social learning spaces which make provision for multiple levels of engagement can provide learners with a wide range of learning opportunities fostering the acquisition of language, leadership and intercultural communication skills.
