Research Abstract |
This research was done in order to clarify the possibility of the practice of telling a story done by people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and mood disorders,in creating and spreading a mutual support network in their community from the viewpoint of the sociology of story. We present some findings from qualitative research carried out on the experiences of people with severe mental illnesses at "Niji-no-Ie",the space for self-help activity of the psychiatry clinic located in Hamamatsu in Japan. It was found that the space for self-help activity provided a supportive communicative opportunity in which people with severe mental illnesses could share their own stories and find support within a community of peers and so on in the sift to recovery-oriented care system.
