Research Abstract |
This study aimed to examine the psychological processes of underestimation phenomena on risk perception of problem behaviors in youth, and to contribute to safety and health education in school. Employing multivariate analyses revealed that the risk perception in high school students (n=7622) consisted of 3 dimensions concerning ethics and illegality, while the one in junior high school students (n=2657) not consisted of such dimensions. The analyses also indicated that low need-for-cognition was the primary factor of the underestimation. As for the junior high school students, their communities' and homes' norms also influenced the underestimation.
