Research Abstract |
The 1st discussion forum proved to be a successful gathering of educators responsible for dental English education... the first ever meeting held in Japan. The presentations of the current status of English courses in dentistry by each school represntative and the fact-finding discussions proved to be a good source of base knowledge for the development of a core curriculum for these courses.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Most of the funding for the 1st fiscal term was appropriated for the per diem expenses of the participants of the first ever meeting of teachers of dental English courses. The discussion forum was a fact-finding on the current status of dental English education among the 29 dental schools in Japan. Seventeen schools sent representatives to the meeting, which was held at Okayama International Center on August 28, 2011. The remainder of the funds was used to purchase equipment and materials, medical English conference and other meeting paraphernalia. The original plan in the grant proposal was to have 2 meetings during the 1st term. However, due to time constraints, the 2nd meeting will be held during the 2nd term. Thus, remaining funds of the 1st term were carried over to the 2nd term.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
A workshop seminar is planned for the 2nd meeting to be held on June 9, 2012 at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. The workshop will focus on formulating the GIO’s and SBO’s of the core curriculum involving patient-dentist communication and inter-profession communication. The seminar will have speakers from the Japan Society for Medical English Education (JASMEE) or other related organizations talking about topics concerning the development of medical English courses and its past and present problems. JASMEE provides a forum for the exchange of new ideas and techniques dedicated to English teaching and learning within the medical/paramedical field. It is hoped that a draft of the core curriculum will be approved by the participants for assessment by MEXT in succeeding meetings.

Expenditure Plans for the Next FY Research Funding |
As in the 1st meeting, most of the funding for the 2nd term will be appropriated for the travel, accommodation and per diem expenses of the participants and invited speakers. The meeting, in the form of a workshop/seminar, will be attended by speakers from JASMEE, representatives of all 29 dental schools in Japan and hopefully interested students. A small part of the funds will be used to purchase meeting paraphernalia and equipment to augment meeting (workshop/seminar) requirements. If enough funding is still available and if schedule of participants permit it, holding a 3rd meeting is possible. Otherwise, the 3rd meeting will be held during the final (3rd) term of the grant. Most of the participants noted the importance of the grant because it is the only way everyone can meet & discuss.
