Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study measured agricultural productivity in Japan and Korea as advanced economies in Asia, and decomposed changes in Japan’s food self-sufficiency rate into two components such as supply-side and demand-side factors. We found that Japan’s rice productivity growth stagnated for the period 1996 to 2006, and so did Korea’s rice productivity for the period 1994 to 2006. Changes in Japan’s food self-sufficiency rate tended to be more attributable to the demand-side factor than to the supply-side factor.
