Research Abstract |
A gelatin sponge with slowly releasing basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) enhances chondrogenesis. This study investigated the optimal amount of basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) in gelatin sponges to fabricate engineered cartilage. Gelatin sponges impregnated with more than 100micrpg/ml b-FGF incorporating beta-TCP with chondrocytes (10x10e6cells/ml) can fabricate engineered cartilage at 4 weeks after implantation. We devised a new tracheoplasty using a cartilage graft engineered outside the esophagus. This study investigated the feasibility of fabricating cartilage engineered outside the esophagus and using it to perform tracheoplasty in a rabbit model. Tracheoplasty with cartilage engineered outside the esophagus may be useful for developing reconstructed airways.
