Research Abstract |
Biogeochemical cycle of C1 compounds in deep-sea sedimentary environment has been investigated through porewater geochemistry and microbial activity measurements. Porewater concentrations of methanol, formaldehyde, and acetone gradually increase with sediment depth in the eastern margin of Japan Sea. In vitro microbial activity shows high rate of methanol oxidation to CO2under anaerobic condition. These results suggest that microbial population significantly contributes C1 compound cycling in deep-sea subsurface sediment.
