Research Abstract |
Physiologically produced gaseous substances such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and nitric oxide have been assumed to play roles in controlling biological functions. In the present study, we examined up-regulation of gaseous substance-generating enzymes by xenobiotics and biologic factors, and its roles in disease developments. An oxidative stress inducer, a physiological antioxidant, and a growth factor induced carbon monoxideand heydrogen sulfide-generating enzymes. Furthermore, we have uncovered possible roles of these enzymes in inhibiting liver injury and arteriosclerosis.
