Research Abstract |
In the mouse olfactory bulb, inputs from olfactory sensory neurons are relayed to second-order neurons, mitral and tufted cells. A mitral/tufted cell extends a single primary dendrite toward a glomerulus, as well as several lateral dendrites. A mitral/tufted cell initially extends multiple dendrites to glomeruli, but they prune all but one dendrite and thereby establish a single primary dendrite during the first postnatal week. In this study, we established a method for quantitative analyses of mitral cell dendrites. We also found that neuronal activity plays an important role in the dendrite pruning process.
