Research Abstract |
My project uses discourse analysis to examine sexuality in educational television and cinema advertisements on AIDS prevention after the German reunification. Results reveal that messages encouraging the use of condoms during sexual intercourse as a method of preventing AIDS were visualized and transmitted in a way that overcame the taboos and sexual norms of former East and West Germany. The project highlights the necessity to view discourse on AIDS, not simply as a health policy, but as a highly bio-political entity which emerges from the sexual norms of society and their transformations.
