Research Abstract |
This research project aimed to examine the phonetic system of Hubei dialect in the 19th-20th centuries and to reconstruct them. As is generally known, Chinese is written by their logographs, therefore it is informative to use the materials recorded in alphabetical manner to analyze the phonetic system. In this project, the situation in the late 19th century was studied through Ingle's Hankow Syllabary (1899) and a paper by Peter Parker in China Review, while that in the 20th century is discussed on some Italian materials such as De Nino's Piccolo Vocabulario Cinese-Italiano (1925) and Landi's Piccolo Vocabulario Italiano-Cinese (1939).
