| Research Abstract |
The research looked at "mass" or "trend" effects within transport related behavioural decisions of individuals; that is the effect of others on decisions such as mode choice and route choice. A particular focus has been to understand the effect of social pressure on car ownership decisions. A second main topic of the project has been to bridge a perceived gap between "social psychology" and "network modelling",specifically, how to include trend effects into demand forecasting. - I personally judge the research has been very successful. It has led to a number of publications and new research collaborations. The research is continuing and has attracted attention from some academics across various disciplines. The specific achievements of this research are:
- A comprehensive review and discussion on the importance of mass effects published as review paper
- Data collection regarding the role of social norms for car ownership motivations. This work was published in Transportation and resulted in various ongoing activities with colleagues from the US, Netherlands, Beirut and Taiwan). I has also become the basis for the PhD thesis of Fajar Belgiawan at Kyoto University.
- A model describing the effect of asymmetric utility functions for a hypothetical choice scenario. This work was also published and is also being continued currently.
- An analysis of possible mass effects in the demand for new transport schemes with a case study of Taiwan High Speed Rail. This work has been submitted for journal publication.
