Outline of Final Research Achievements |
A training program aiming to improve a success rate of the peripheral-short catheter insertion was constructed from five steps. The steps included an extraction of problems using video recording of the novice nurses’ practice, and educational interventions of experienced nurses. The results of investigation using a controlled trial design demonstrated an increased success rate of the intravenous catheter placement and improved factors of failures. Insertion of a needle tip into the vein, or execution of blood reverse flow into the flashback chamber during the indwelling needle insertion, was significantly improved after the interventions of the experienced nurses. As a result of the interventions of experienced nurses and using an intravenous catheter placement algorithm and others, the novice nurses’ ability to assess and understand the specific handling procedure of the inner and outer needles in intravenous catheter placement was improved.
