Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the aim of promoting the development of elderly activity care (AC) during basic nursing education, we examined the educational state and staff perception of AC in geriatric nursing in nursing colleges and extracted educational tasks for AC conducted by nurses working in institutions housing the elderly. We then utilized our findings to develop and evaluate an elderly AC program in geriatric nursing. As a result, we found that 30% of AC education involved lectures and on-campus training and 20% of AC education involved on-site training. However, 70% of the staff acknowledged the need for education through on-site training. Moreover, nurses working at institutions housing the elderly strongly felt the need for education regarding mental and physical aspects of elderly individuals receiving AC. Furthermore, based on student self-evaluations, it was suggested that continuous learning in elderly AC education from on-campus lectures to on-site training will improve educational outcomes.
