Research Abstract |
To reveal the spatial geometry of synaptic inputs on dendrites, we optically imaged synaptic activities from hundreds of dendritic spines in hippocampal CA3 pyramidal cells. When a neuron received synchronous synaptic inputs, the coactivated spines tended to be located closely within~10μm along the dendrites. In contrast, synchronous inputs were dispersed over dendrites of fast-spiking basket cells, a subclass of inhibitory interneurons in CA3. Thus, spatial integration of synaptic inputs is cell-type specific.
