Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
For the first year of the project, my focus was on Japanese environmental philosophy. I made five presentations at two national and three international conferences (on Ando Shoeki, Ninomiya Sontoku and Eto Tekirei), published two articles in English (one on Ando Shoeki and one on Eto Tekirei) and co-edited a book on Asian philosophical texts (in English), scheduled to appear in summer 2024. A good portion of the research was dedicated to Latin American philosophy, with an emphasis on native views of the environment, in order to establish a theoretical framework. As preparation for the field research I plan to do next year, I established contacts with researchers from Columbia and Mexico and agreed to collaborate for this project. Also, I have been brushing up my Spanish language skills.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Originally, the plan was to focus on Japanese philosophy for the first year, as a continuation of my previous research, and for the most part research has gone according to plan. Apart from the articles I mentioned above, I have also started working on a translation project from Japanese philosophy (focusing on the status of animals, and animal ethics) with a fellow researcher from Switzerland. We plan to publish a co-authored book in 2025-26. My research on Latin American is also going rather well, but it remains mostly theoretical. Until I have the opportunity to do fieldwork in Central and South America, I have to rely on scholarly knowledge, exclusively.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the second year of the project, I plan to switch my focus to Latin American philosophy of nature in order to establish the coordinates for triangulation. I will continue to read Latin American philosophers, but also attempt to compare and contrast them with Japanese philosophical ideas. During this first year, the idea that human beings are an intrinsic part of nature and that environmental ethics should be premised on this has emerged as a possible candidate for creating the link, and comparative framework, between Latin American and Japanese philosophies. This year, I plan to explore this possibility in greater detail.
