Research Project

Project/Area Number 23K00197

Project Period (FY) 2023-04-01 – 2026-03-31
KeywordsSubtitle translation / Film translation / German movies / French movies
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The subtitles of several German and French movies have been collected and analyzed according to the following aspects: translation of strong language, use of female language markers, and adherence to the four-characters-per-second-rule of Japanese subtitles.
Especially the subtitles (and subtitle translators) of German movies show a greater consideration for gendered language. While the subtitles of English-language movies often use female language without considering the background of the movies' characters (social status, sexuality) and in a general way, the subtitles in German movies apply female language in consideration of the appearing characters' historic background, social status, and sexuality.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to parental leave the research has been paused for several months, but will be continued later this year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The collection of more subtitle samples of German, French, and English-language movies will continue to establish a large enough corpus. Furthermore, research about the history of subtitle translation in Japan will be deepened to analyze how translations and their underlying norms may have changed over the course of the last 90 years.

Causes of Carryover

Due to parental leave the originally calculated amount could not be spent according to plan. The amount will be used to buy articles and for travel expenses which were planned originally for the first fiscal year of this research,
