Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I will summarize our research achievements in the first year in three categories. 1. Publishing: The Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigator (Co-I) co-authored an invited chapter for an edited volume on humor research. The volume will be published in spring of 2024. The PI and Co-I also submitted a research paper to an international journal and it is currently under review. 2. Conference Presentations: The PI and Co-I were active with academic conference presentations in the first year. The PI delivered three international and two domestic presentations. 3. Data Collection: the PI and Co-I designed a new empirical study to help English language learners understand and respond to humor in online environments.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research is progressing rather smoothly because: 1. We were able to successfully design a new empirical study and have started collecting data. It is easier to collect data now that all classes are F2F. 2. All academic conference abstracts were accepted. 3. We were invited to submit a chapter to an edited volume on our research theme and a paper submitted to an international journal has progressed to the second stage (accept with revisions).

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Below is the plan for the second year of the project. 1. We will continue to collect data. In addition, we have started to collect data on learners of languages besides English in order to make the results applicable to a wider range of researchers. 2. We have submitted proposals to international and domestic conferences and we are awaiting the results. 3. In the second half of the year, we will begin writing a new paper based on the latest data collection.

Causes of Carryover |
Not all of the funds were used in the first year (carried over) for the following reasons: 1. The PI will buy a new notebook computer in the second year because the desired model was not in stock at the end of the first year. 2. The cost of travel to conferences has increased, so some funds were saved for the second and third years, when we have more data to present.
