Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Very simple models suggest firewall vulnerabilities, such models often oversimplify real-world scenarios, neglecting factors like internal connections among nodes and the influence of other information held by nodes. Therefore, collaborating with mathematicians, particularly those skilled in graph theory, I proposed several improved models and use them to explore some of the reasons why firewalls fail. The study so far found that firewalls are less effective as the number of network nodes increases, and that both high- and low-degree nodes pose non-negligible risks. The study also raises awareness about the role of internal monitors in preventing leaks. The effectiveness of information leakage control could be increased with the monitor's proximity to the information source. This necessitates a greater focus on internal monitoring, perhaps using information and communication technology. These findings were published in the work of Teramoto, S.; Kaji, S.; and Osada, S. in "The Internal Network Structure that Affects Firewall Vulnerability," featured in The Law and Ethics of Data Sharing in Health Sciences (Springer 2024).

Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
With the collaboration of mathematicians, particularly those skilled in graph theory, I was able to more clearly demonstrate than initially expected the relationship between the likelihood of information leakage outside the firewall and the internal network structure within the firewall. Specifically, I found that the distances between nodes that inhibit the spread of information and those that may facilitate it are significant. These results were published in the work of Teramoto, S.; Kaji, S.; and Osada, S. in "The Internal Network Structure that Affects Firewall Vulnerability," featured in The Law and Ethics of Data Sharing in Health Sciences (Springer 2024).

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I will specifically envision use cases for cross-border medical and healthcare data sharing, examine and describe the applicable legal regulations and risks, and then consider methods to enable safe and smooth sharing of such information. Initially, the plan was simply to create rules, but now it aims to design procedures on a more practical, dynamic consent platform.
