Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The research project results have been presented at the IAEA International Isotope Hydrology Symposium 2023, the NARE2023 international conference, and the 10th IER Annual Symposium for experts and public sections, and two peer-reviewed manuscripts are being prepared. In the first year, this project achieved initial daily simulations of tritium atmospheric releases during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in March 2011 and monthly tritium simulations of the Pacific Ocean from the FDNPP site before and after the ALPS-treated water discharge between 2023 and 2053. The precipitation collector became operational on the Institute Environmental Radioactivity (IER) roof and monthly precipitation sampling started on September 2023. River water was collected from 19 sites in headwater catchments of Abukuma River on October 12th 2023. Tritium was measured with medium-level at IER and with low-level by Prof. Dr. N. Akata at Hirosaki University. These tritium values were at natural level and used to estimate groundwater transit times. In the difficult-to-return zone, water sampling started at Funasawa, Suzuuchi, and Inkyozaka ponds of Okuma Town and 4 sites in the main channel and two tributaries of Ottazawa River in the vicinity of the FDNPP. Tritium measurements with medium-level at Fukushima University and the selection of springs and rivers for tritium sampling are ongoing. In addition, the project was able to achieve an initial simulation of the groundwater flow model in the FDNPP site for the tritium travel times.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research project continues as planned with some delays due to the extended duration of the electronic chip equipment purchase. The necessary equipment and consumables were purchased and installed for water sample distillation and tritium measurements.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The research project plan has not changed and tasks are on track. In the second year, simulations of daily tritium releases into the atmosphere during the FDNPP accident in March 2011 and of the ALPS-treated water discharge into the Pacific Ocean are planed to be finished and to be submitted for publication in two peer-reviewed journals. The headwater catchments of Abukuma River and coastal rivers are to be sampled in summer-autumn period of 2024 for tritium measurements with enrichment. In the difficult-to-return zone, water sampling for tritium continues at Funasawa, Suzuuchi, and Inkyozaka ponds of Okuma Town and 4 sites in the main channel and two tributaries of Ottazawa River in the vicinity of the FDNPP and collected water samples are distilled. Tritium measurements with medium-level at Fukushima University and the selection of springs for tritium sampling are to be completed. For the FDNPP site, the groundwater flow model that is being adjusted for the travel time simulation of tritium and other radionuclides, simulates initial results.

Causes of Carryover

The reason that some amount remained in this fiscal year, because the travel costs of the IAEA international symposium on Isotope Hydrology on 3-7 July, 2023 held in Vienna, Austria were covered with a short-term additional budget from IER. The transferred amount is to be used in the next fiscal year to cover costs for participating in two international conferences in November 2024 to be held in the EU.
