Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2023, I presented my research at two international conferences---the 4th Biannual Conference of the International Network of the Study of Lyric (INSL), as well as Yeats and Elevation: The Nobel Prize Centenary Conference for the International Yeats Society. I was able to develop my papers in regards to the relationship between self and others in lyric poetry in Yeats and contemporary American poetry. I also served as the chair of a symposium on lyric poetry, organized by the the English Poetry Society of Japan, and gave a brief presentation on the state of lyric poetry in contemporary America.
In addition to presenting my work at these venues, I also published the article “Self in Revision: On James Merrill’s ‘Christmas Tree,'" which explores how Merrill revised his poem in order to create a more inclusive self.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I am making progress on my research project. I was able to get feedback on my papers at two international conferences and a symposium in Japan. I plan to turn these papers into publishable articles. I also published an article in an international literary magazine on the theme of self and others in lyric poetry.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2024, I will be participating as a panelist in a symposium on lyric poetry organized by the Tokyo Branch of the American Literature Society of Japan. My paper will focus on the subject of the lyric self and contemporary American poetry.
I am also planning to invite a contemporary poet from the US to give a talk on contemporary American poetry, provided our schedules work out.

Causes of Carryover |
I was planning to travel overseas to work with an archive, but it did not happen due to schedule conflicts. I plan to make the trip in 2024.
