Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the previous academic year, I conducted foundational research on the legal systems of Mexico and the Andean Community, focusing on data protection frameworks. Additionally, I authored a book chapter exploring the intersection between public law, particularly national security, and data protection, with an emphasis on trade secrets. This chapter is set for publication in 2024. Furthermore, I assumed the chair of the Free Trade Agreement committee at the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), where we are preparing a survey on data protection of scientific research of biologics. These efforts aim to enhance the understanding and development of robust data protection standards in the region.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The primary reason for the delay in my research was the inability to organize trips to Brazil and Mexico due to scheduling conflicts, both on my end and with potential hosts. Despite these setbacks, I am hopeful to arrange these trips within the current academic year to advance my research on data protection frameworks in Latin America.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the upcoming academic year, I plan to advance my research on the protection of data in Latin America. This includes a field research trip to Mexico, where I will meet with legal experts and gather first-hand information on their effective instruments of protection. Additionally, I aim to publish at least one article focusing on Brazil’s data protection laws and their intersection with public law and national security. These activities will enhance the comparative analysis and contribute to developing robust data protection standards in the region.

Causes of Carryover |
The primary reason for carrying over the budget to the next fiscal year is due to scheduling conflicts that prevented organizing research trips to Brazil and Mexico. These trips are critical for gathering data on their data protection frameworks. Despite these setbacks, I plan to reschedule these visits for the next academic year to ensure the project's success. In the next fiscal year, the budget will be utilized for: (a) Travel Expenses: Covering costs for field research trips to Brazil and Mexico; (b) Research Activities: Conducting interviews and gathering data; (c) Publications.
