Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Our project aims at evaluating the role model effect on students' mathematics performance. In this project, we conducted a field experiment in which the treatment was a series of 8 videos on role models were shown to students in classes, including primary school, middle school and high school students. We divided classes into treatment classes and control classes, where treatment classes received treatment and control classes did not. We conduced mathematics knowledge tests, mathematics ability tests, surveys to the students to test their math ability and non-cognitive skills to both treatment classes and control classes before and after the treatment. We also conducted survey on the parenting styles and teaching styles to students, and also personality tests to teachers and parents. We collected, cleaned and analyzed the data. Our methodology is difference-in-difference, to find the treatment effect of role model on students. We conducted several specifications of the models for data analysis. We find that the role model has negative effects on mathematics performance, and the resutls are robust. The role model effect is particularly negative and significant for male students with low scores. This is because the role models have little similarity with these groups of students. We will proceed with further analysis to confirm these results.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We finished the data collection, data cleaning process quite smoothly, and we even conducted most of the data analysis process, which is with our expectations. This paper has been presented in several academic conferences and seminars at several good universities, and received valuable feedbacks. During our research process, the collaboration with the schools are quite well.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will next proceed with further data analysis, and present the paper in seminars and conferences. We plan to submit this paper to a top 5 economic journal.

Causes of Carryover |
In 2023, this research fund had been used as travel expenses for academic conferences, seminars at universities, and for research trip organizing the field experiment. The reason the research fund was not completely spent is that some research trips were postponed. Also, the purchasing of some equipments are postponed to this year as well. In 2024, the fund will be used for similar purposes. This research fund will also be used to purchase devices for research use, such as statistic softwares.
