Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Thanks to this project I was able to present a new class of many-body quantum engine termed as Pauli engine. The engine is fueled by the energy associated with the change in the statistical behavior of the working medium from bosonic to fermionic and back. The machine exploits genuine nonclassical forms of energy different from heat and was experimentally realized using a trapped ultracold quantum gas with an efficiency of 25%. These results establish quantum statistics as a useful thermodynamic resource for work production and have encountered great excitement in the quantum thermodynamic community, leading to a publication in Nature and several talks in conferences. Moreover, the possible quantum technological applications have sparked interest not only in academy but also in industry.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
I originally targeted to have already the optimization of the engine and the study of the dimensional crossover together with different geometries of the trap on the first year. Since the project was quite ambitious and the presentation of results in conferences and talks during group visits required a considerable amount of time, this is still on progress. I am currently writing a work with the detailed theoretical treatment that led to the results presented in [Nature 621, 723 (2023)] plus a study of the engine under other regimes. I also supervised Nicola Mang’s internship focused on the understanding and general characterization of the Pauli engine in one-dimension and the comparison to the three-dimensional case (presented as Mang’s bachelor thesis in Germany with excellent grades).

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The goals for the medium time future are: i) to close the writing of the detailed theoretical model underlying the results presented in [Nature 621, 723] including the study of the engine in other regimes in three-dimensions (my preliminary results suggest that the efficiency can reach the ideal bound when the system is driven from what is call unitarity to the BCS regime because the extra energy cost due to the binding energy is avoided), ii) continue and close the one-dimensional study, iii) explore possible dimensional crossovers. All of these scenarios are realistic from an experimental point of view. If time allows, iv) tackle the optimization of the efficiency regarding the geometry of the trap, and v) address the Pauli engine in systems other than ultracold quantum gases in a trap.

Causes of Carryover |
The left over from the first year is less than 2万円, I plan to incorporate this amount to the amount originally conceived for articles cost in the second year.
