Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To investigate the potential role of mitophagy in maintaining the biological characteristics of cancer stem cells, human colorectal cancer cells (HCT116) were used in experiments. We found that Mdivi-1, a pharmacological mitophagy inhibitor, slightly decreased the clonogenic formation ability of HCT116 cells. Interestingly, doxorubicin treatment of HCT116 cells for 7 days upregulated several mitophagy-related genes and increased mitophagy activity, but inversely decreased the expression of cancer stem cell markers (Sox2 and c-myc). Further studies are warranted to elucidate the precise role and relevant mechanism of mitophagy in cancer stem cells.
