Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This research project provides empirical evidence that Short-term and Long-term effect of the education inequality on the economic growth and environment conservation using Japan and international data. The population education level is a crucial factor of the human capital driving economic growth. The education institutes’ operations are deeply relied on the public-school funding from the tax income. Distribute the school funding equally or competitively to the targeted education institutes are different because the competitive funding distribution may lead the greater education inequality. We found that reducing learning outcome inequality among students is crucial in improving economic development from both the short-term and long-term perspectives using global learning data. Compared to the within-country effect, the greater between-country effect of the relationship between learning quality and economic development is confirmed, showing expectations of the between-country effect. Moreover, inequality has no significant effect on reading, math, and reading and on the acceptance of nuclear electricity or renewable energy. The insightful policy implications suggest that policymakers should consider reducing learning outcome inequality among students and improving the within-country relationship between education and economic development.

Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The first year of the research project (FY2023) is as follows. We aimed to investigate the short-term and long-term effects of the education level and inequality on economic development and environmental conservation by constructing the panel national data from international institutions from the year 1990 to the recent possible year, and we have completed the research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The second year of the research project (FY2024): Conduct the original internet survey in Japan targeting the general households using the internet survey (e.g. Nikkei research/Rakuten research). We aim to collect the information including individuals’ national center test for university admissions (testing score); inequality of the testing score; resource for each enrolled student; inequality resource for each enrolled student; employee earnings; attitudes to the environment conservation; ideal and actual years of schooling and other socio-economic and demographic background.

Causes of Carryover

独自のインターネット調査会社により、教育格差の長期的な視点を調査を行う、調査費を充実するため次年度使用額が生じた。
