Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this study, the ARB process was improved the prepare the non-oxidized bulk laminate for realizing the NC bulk magnet. As a preliminary experiment, the Cu/Fe/Cu/Co/Cu starting materials were selected for demonstrating the laminated microstructure. The nanoscale-controlled layered microstructure with about 40~100 nm was partially achieved. The Nd-Fe-B material prepared by strip casting was used to prepare the bulk laminate. The laminated Nd-Cu microstructure was achieved by ARB pross. Based on these results, it is assumed that the new developed ARB process have possibility for realizing the nanoscale-controlled microstructure in the NC bulk magnet.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
It took some time to maintenance the ARB equipment to allow the ARB process in a low oxygen atmosphere. And it was quite difficult to find the proper process temperature for the ARB process because the RE alloys and TM metals are easy to react to alloying other unfavorable phases. In addition, the preparation of magnet laminate by the ARB process was quite challenge because the brittleness of the RE alloys. Therefore, for these reasons, it took a long time to establish initial process conditions.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Based on the previous preliminary work, the possibility of ARB process for realizing the nanoscale-controlled microstructure was confirmed. The Sm-Co thin plate and Fe-Co plate are used as starting materials. Future plan is the investigation of the mechanism of nano-layered texture formation during the ARB process according to the pre-heating temperature. Since the RE alloys are very easy to react with the TM metals over about 600C, it is necessary to find the proper pre-heating temperature for preparing the laminate bulk magnet. In addition, the experimental demonstration of the effective coupling length from the thickness of nano-layered Fe and magnetic properties will be progressed.

Causes of Carryover |
The variance was due to fewer conference presentations and publications than expected. This year, I plan to use the budget to purchase raw materials and supplies for experiments and to present at conferences.
