Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In digital fabrication workflows, users typically create 3D models in virtual computer-aided design (CAD) software to generate machine instructions for physical fabrication. However, matching physical materials with CAD models requires significant effort. To address this challenge, we proposed to develop an alternative workflow where users create instructions directly in physical space by drawing with a pen or pasting stickers on the material.
We conducted a preliminary study to investigate in which situations this type of physical interface will be preferred. We also implemented a working prototype of the system. We have summarized the project in a technical paper that is currently under review.
