Outline of Final Research Achievements

Following cultural anthropology’s exploration of a better world and critique of the major political and economic forces that define our lives, this study has examined what cultural anthropology can do in the field of social design. Collecting case studies on the boundary areas between cultural anthropology and non-research activities, and interviewing practitioners in several related fields, we held two panels on the boundary areas and collaboration between non-academic practices and anthropology at the meetings of the Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology, which were published as a special issue in the research journal. This study is an important contribution to the redefinition of what cultural anthropology can be, and more generally, to the creative consideration and practice of collaborative relationships at the interface between academia and society.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では文化人類学と実務の境界領域（ビジネスや教育、出版、社会開発、産学連携等の領域で）についての実践事例を蓄積し、それに基づいて文化人類学がどのようでありうるのかについて考察を深めた。本研究で行った事例の蓄積と考察は、文化人類学をより広げていくうえで、またより一般的に、学問と社会（産業や行政を含め）との境界領域における協働関係をより具体的に考え、また実践していくうえで、さらに、それぞれの人がキャリアの中で文化人類学を学び、活用していくことを実践するうえで、重要な貢献であり、「学術的」あるいは「社会的」のように括れない、両者の境界を乗り越えていくような意義を持つ。
