Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the first quarter of 2021, the PI, hold the kick-off meeting with his local collaborators. In collaboration with his research partners, they selected the QoL-based evaluation areas for the project in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. They also designed the semi-structured interview to collect qualitative information on the participants' experience before, during and after the electrification. However, given the travel restrictions due to COVID-19 in South East Asia and Japan, the data collection through field visits had to be postponed until 2022. By the third quarter of the fiscal year, remote data collection through one research partner occurred once in the Philippines. The group developed the first qualitative explanations of electrification effects on QoL, expanding the understanding of electrification in the person's life and helping to adjust the initial quantitative evaluation framework based on the findings. The project's initial results were presented in two talks at an international conference organised by the Japanese Society of Energy and Resources. The PI also participated in a Seminar organised by the Center for South East Asian Studies at Kyoto University. In addition, the PI published an open-access international conference proceeding article with his collaborator in Indonesia. By the end of the project's first year, the PI applied for a carry-over procedure to use unspent funds for on-site data collection and participation in another conference in 2022.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
During 2021, the PI successfully made the project's kick-off meeting and the selection of evaluation sites. However, the travel restrictions due to COVID-19 in SE Asia and Japan affected the qualitative exploration and the quantitative questionnaire design. The semi-structured interview to collect the qualitative information was designed on time. However, the field visits to collect data had to be postponed to 2022. Only once could data collection take place through one of the research partners. Despite this, the dissemination of results at a domestic conference was accomplished as planned. By the end of the project's first year, the PI applied for a carry-over to use the remaining funds.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2022, the project will concentrate on data collection in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, continuing the use of semi-structured interviews who received solar systems from 2019-2022. The PI will analyse the data to extract meaningful interpretations of how solar renewable electrification affects a person's life and Qol domains. In addition, the PI intends to present the results of the qualitative phase of the research at an international conference as planned.
