Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2022, the PI conducted on-site data collection in the Philippines and Malaysia and participated in two conferences in 2022. Continuing the use of semi-structured interviews who received solar systems from 2019-2022, the PI deepened the exploration of the effects of solar renewable systems on Qol domains in the participants' lives. Solar PVs improved the capabilities for education among households with students, allowing them to do schoolwork at night. It benefited social and family interactions during the evenings and nights. It also reduced reliance on kerosene lamps and car batteries, negatively affecting safety, productivity and the household economy. The study also identified other important emerging aspects, i.e. the system's capacity limitations to promote economic development and concerns about the shift in lifestyle cycles with the extended use of lighting. In sum, the project progressed in understanding how electrification affects a person's life. Finally, in 2022 the PI has advanced in establishing a collaborative agreement with its research partner BRIN to assist in collecting data in the selected sites of Indonesia and plans for joint research with two other new partners.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In 2022, data collection successfully took place in the Philippines and Malaysia. However, data collection in Indonesia was delayed by a new restriction to fieldwork research for foreign investigators. The PI has advanced in establishing a collaborative agreement with its research partner BRIN to visit the selected sites of Indonesia and with two other new partners for a potential new collaboration. The dissemination of results at an international conference was accomplished as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2023, the project will restructure the questionnaire applied in field interviews during FY 2022 (if needed). Fieldwork will take place with the following tentative schedule: (1) Indonesia - May & Oct, 2023, (2) Philippines - Jun & Sep, 2023, and (3) Malaysia - Jul & Nov, 2023. The PI will participate in two upcoming International Conferences: (1) The EGU General Assembly 2023 (Apr 2023) and (2) The 6th International Conference on Clean Energy and Technology 2023 (Jun 2023). In addition, the PI will participate in another domestic conference (tentatively the annual meeting by the Japan Society of Energy and Resources, Nov 2023) and prepare a research article based on the FY2022 qualitative findings using narrative research methods.
